Discuss 2 of the 4 SCENES on the next page. These are scenes of international politics and discuss them by following how we have discussed them in lectures and tutorials.

 

2.     
There are links to follow media accounts of the scene to make yourself familiar with the scene and to begin your research.

 

3.     
Conduct research to find 2-3 academic articles or chapters that will provide you a substantive knowledge about this scene. You can supplement this knowledge with 2-3 non-academic sources from media.

 

4.     
For each SCENE identify the ACTORS in play, their ACTS, what each REPRESENTS, AUDIENCES for whom they perform, and RESOURCES they mobilise or draw from. Excellent!

 

5.     
Conclude your discussion with what EFFECTS the scene may have created and whether these effects reflect or contradict the INTENTIONS of the actors. And discuss how to think it of it as an example of international politics.

 

6.

Who are the Windrush generation and how did the scandal unravel? In April 2018 Home Secretary Amber Rudd resigned as a result of the Windrush scandal, which erupted when Commonwealth nationals living in the UK were wrongly threatened with deportation and deprived of medical care because they lacked the correct documentation.

Time for peaceful resistance, says Gaza’s new movement. On 4 April 2018 inspired by Abu Artema, who pondered what would happen if thousands of Gazans, the vast majority of whom are refugees and their descendants, attempted to peacefully cross the frontier to reach their ancestral homes.

A postcolonial Paris demonstration. On 17 October 1961, toward the end of the Algerian War of Independence (1954–62), under orders from the head of the Parisian police, the French National Police attacked a demonstration in Paris of some 30,000 pro-National Liberation Front (FLN) Algerians. After denying it for nearly forty years, the French government finally acknowledged 40 deaths, although the estimates indicate 100 to 300 people.

Reform Bill Passed: Women’s Vote Won. On 6 February 1918, after years of struggles by the suffragettes, The Representation of the People Act granted the vote to women over the age of 30 who met a property qualification. The same Act gave the vote to all men over the age of 21.
