Grand Canyon University Tracking Systems for Data Management Discussion

NUR 674 answer to classmate Debra Crookendale

Describe the attributes that support sustainable outcomes. Will your project have sustainable outcomes, or will your outcomes be a one-time occurrence?

Sustainability can be considered a domain of quality in healthcare, extending the responsibility of health services to patients not just of today but of the future. The longer term perspective highlights the impacts of our healthcare system on our environment and communities and in turn back onto population health. A sustainable approach will therefore expand the healthcare definition of value to measure health outcomes against environmental and social impacts alongside financial costs.(Mortimer et al.,2018)

Some attributes that support sustainable outcomes are provider engagement and patient engagement. Provider engagement increases positive outcomes for the patient by ensuring all staff who access and install invasive devices are competent in the managing and installing of the devices. In terms of patient engagement listening to the patient and ensuring the patient has the teaching and the autonomy to understand how they can play a role in helping to prevent hospital acquired infections both at home and on discharge is key is stamping out infections. For example, asking staff to wash their hands prior to providing care or entering the room and ensuring when at home the devices are only accessed by professionals who are trained. Patients must also be taught the importance of performing handwashing prior to touching any invasive devise. My project will have sustainable outcomes especially since there is a high turn over of residents in the ICU it is essential the doctors are trained and proven competent in ascertaining the protocols for determining when the devices are indicated and contraindicated to keep down costs for the patient and reduce patient mortality.

Answer:

Attributes that support sustainable outcomes in healthcare include provider and patient engagement. Provider engagement ensures that all staff who access and install invasive devices are competent in managing and installing them. Patient engagement involves educating patients about how they can help prevent hospital-acquired infections both at home and on discharge, such as handwashing before touching any invasive devices. Sustainable outcomes consider health outcomes against environmental and social impacts alongside financial costs. The project will have sustainable outcomes, especially with the high turnover rate of residents in the ICU. It’s crucial that physicians are trained and competent in determining protocols for invasive device indications and contraindications, which reduces patient mortality and cost for the patient.
