To develop a Practicum Experience Plan (PEP) as an advanced practice nurse, it is essential to establish specific and measurable objectives that align with your professional aims. This plan will guide your activities, assessments, and outcomes during your clinical practicum experience. Three areas to focus on in your PEP are clinical reasoning, quality in your clinical specialty, and interpersonal collaborative practice.

In order to create your PEP, you should review your Clinical Skills Self-Assessment Form from the previous week and identify areas in which you would like to gain practical experience or continue to grow as an advanced practice nurse. Consider how your practicum experiences can help you achieve these aims.

When developing your objectives, it is important to ensure they are specific, measurable, attainable, results-focused, and time-bound. Additionally, they should reflect the higher-order domains of Bloom’s taxonomy, such as application level and above. Aim to have three new objectives for each class, each quarter, while also considering previous objectives to continue working towards.

To determine whether the necessary resources are available at your practicum site to support your professional aims and proposed objectives, it is important to discuss them with your Preceptor. Their input and guidance will be valuable in ensuring your objectives are feasible and aligned with the resources available.

In terms of guiding your clinical practice, select one nursing theory and one counseling/psychotherapy theory that best align with your approach. Provide a rationale for why you chose these theories, supporting your approach with evidence-based literature.

Finally, create a timeline of practicum activities to demonstrate how you plan to meet your goals and objectives based on the requirements of your practicum. This timeline will serve as a roadmap for your practicum experience, allowing you to track your progress and stay on track.

In summary, the Practicum Experience Plan (PEP) is a crucial element of your clinical education as an advanced practice nurse. By establishing specific objectives, aligning your goals with available resources, selecting appropriate theories to guide your practice, and creating a timeline of activities, you can ensure a successful and impactful practicum experience.
