This week’s discussion about peer groups brought me back to my high school days and thinking about where I fit in. I agree with the textbook, which says that students who are neither too popular nor too unpopular seem to have the easiest time in high school. My time was relatively drama-free (thank god). I floated between several different peer groups in school surrounding academics, athletic ability, and after-school interests. I was never fully accepted by the “popular” kids in my school because my family was neither wealthy nor influential in my community (both of which were considered necessary to the elite popular group). I got involved more heavily in a peer group that was a bad influence toward the end of high school but thankfully it had little long-term effect on my overall well-being. What type of peer group did you belong to in high school?
